Self catering options on the Zambezi

Many bush enthusiasts like to do their own thing on holiday and Livingstone offers a selection of affordable self catering options right on the Zambezi.

For a family or group of friends, Kayube Estate is perfect. It is situated at about 30kms on an excellent road from the Victoria Falls and sleeps eight (two ensuite bedrooms with an extra bed and another two comfortable beds in the lounge). A large pool overlooks the river. Elephant and other game on the other side of the river often provide wonderful sightings and hippo can be heard further down the river.

Kayube is perfect for a laid back stay on the Zambezi

Only the lower floor, surrounded by beautiful grounds, is rented out. Kayube is fully serviced.

A smaller option is the lovely “Mama Out Of Africa“, also on the Kayube Estate which can sleep up to four people. Once the changing facilities on set for the famous film “Out of Africa” it  now forms part of the thatched chalet right on the Zambezi, with a cosy upstairs deck overlooking the river. The ‘Mama’ is perfect for one or two couples as it is tranquil and romantic. It has a charming outdoor bathroom and a kitchen.

Sadly shampoo and Robert Redford are not included...

A private 12 seater river safari boat is on the property for river safaris and sundowner cruises.

Kubu Cabins is situated on a neighbouring farm and offers delightful chalets in amongst the trees on the banks of the river, accommodating from two to six people each.

Kubu offers a selection of cozy natural stone and wood chalets

Livingstone has excellent shops, with a large Shoprite and Spar offering anything from basic supplies to fresh fruit and vegetables.

For 4×4 enthusiasts in need a bit of a technical fix, there is a full mechanical facility on site at Kayube run by Peter Kermer. Vehicles can also be safely left here for extended periods of time where they will be regularly started up and prepared for the return of the owners.

  1. Such wonderful propositions…. even without Robbert Redford and the shampoo, these places to stay (and spend some time in the dry heat that goes with your climate) sound like: “What are we waiting for…??!!”
I will ask for more information and start to make plans, because this is too lovely to let pass by unused and unknown… Adventures and lots of wildlife await us…!
